Voice & Narration

Every voice tells a story. The best voices make you want to hear
the next one.

Whether I’m narrating a story, teaching an online course, recording a commercial, or trying to make a roomful of strangers laugh, I’ve spent much of my life behind a microphone. Along the way I’ve discovered that the medium changes, but the goal rarely does: connect with people, tell a story, and leave them feeling something.

Although these examples span very different kinds of work, they’re connected by the same belief: a good voice should never draw attention to itself. It should make the listener want to keep listening.

  • Comedy – Stand-up clips and performances.
  • Voiceover – Commercial, corporate, e-learning, and character work.

Narration

Years before Farty Artie Goes to a Party! became a published children’s book, I recorded a complete narrated version simply because I wanted to bring the story to life. This gave me the opportunity to experiment with dramatic emphasis, pacing, and a soundtrack full of enthusiastic sound effects.

Whether it’s a children’s story, an audiobook, a documentary, or any project that benefits from an engaging, conversational voice, I enjoy helping great stories find their audience.

Farty Artie Goes to the Party!

Even today, it’s still one of my favorite projects. The story was a joy to write, but narrating it added another dimension that made the characters feel wonderfully real. I may be a little biased, but I still think the sound effects are epic.

Additional narration samples will be added here as they become available.

Comedy

I’d always thought I was funny, but I was challenged to prove that publicly when I was volunteered to do a ten-minute stand-up comedy act at a local venue. I discovered that making friends laugh over dinner is one thing, but making a room full of strangers laugh is something else entirely.

To my considerable relief, it went well enough that I was invited back. Apparently making strangers laugh is a skill worth having. Who knows? This may become yet another third-act career.

Please forgive the less-than-stellar audio quality. The performance was recorded on a phone in the back of the room, so the audience reactions come through much more clearly than I do at times. Even so, I think it captures the atmosphere of the evening, and more importantly, lets you judge for yourself whether I managed to survive my first stand-up performance.

Additional performances will be added here as they happen.

Live Storytelling
Reading Farty Artie Goes to a Party!

A live reading at the English Lovers Bookshop in Valencia.

I had the pleasure of reading Farty Artie Goes to a Party! to a room full of book lovers and other authors at the English Bookshop in Valencia. The audience voted it their favorite story of the evening, and I came home with a three inch tall trophy that now enjoys a level of self-importance wildly disproportionate to its size.

Live readings combine writing, narration, character voices, timing, and audience interaction, making them one of my favorite ways to bring stories to life.

Voiceover

I’ve been behind a microphone for much of my professional life. Along the way I’ve recorded corporate narration, commercial voiceovers, radio reading services for the visually impaired, audiobook narration, and hundreds of hours of online learning content viewed by over a million learners around the world.

While much of that work was either proprietary or produced long before it was common to keep digital copies, I’m always interested in new opportunities to lend my voice to engaging projects.

Whether you’re producing an audiobook, creating an online course, recording a commercial, looking for an event speaker, or simply searching for the right voice to tell a story, I’d love to hear about your project.
